Language 2013 - Yesim Ozsoy

LANGUAGE, the debut play by Şenay Tanrıvermiş, was selected for New Text New Theatre Festival 2 and was staged at GalataPerform under the direction of Yeşim Özsoy.

Arzu is an elegant woman in her late 30s. She has lost one of her Marrylou silk-cashmere fingerless gloves and obsessively searches for it. When her son Yiğit appears, the surreal yet highly realistic dialogues between mother and son draw the audience into a world shaped by consumerism, centralization, and urbanization frenzy. Neither Berna, a public official, nor the earthquakes shaking the upstairs apartment, nor the professor with his own problems can offer a remedy for Arzu and Yiğit’s addiction to consumer culture.

Told through a grotesque lens, the play captures the everyday life of a social class on the verge of disappearing, skillfully blending colloquial language with pop culture, the language of consumption with political discourse, and tracing the losses of society within a fantastical atmosphere.
