Century’s Love (2010) - Yesim Ozsoy

A Play About Memory and Love

Focusing on eight different love stories across eight distinct times and places from the last century of Turkish history, the play ends in the present moment—“Now.” From 1950s Nişantaşı to the New Year’s Eve of 1999 and the excitement of a new century, from a train station and migration in 1924 to the years 1951, 1959, and the dark, tense post-coup days of 1981, the play presents a wide-ranging tableau that gradually transforms into a shared act of remembering with the audience.

As it moves between these different scenes, the play delves into the nature of love—often nourished by impossibility—and the intricate details of unique moments from the past century. At its heart, it is a play about memory.
